The joys of the scuba expeditions of yesteryear are brought back to life in detail, such as its polished case with a diameter of just 40.5 mm and a “glassbox”-style sapphire crystal. The reliability of this vintage yet high-performance model is enhanced with cutting-edge technology, including Super-LumiNova® for readability and a black aluminium ring on the rotating bezel. The Caliber 80, with an autonomy of up to 80 hours, and water-resistance up to a pressure of 20 bar (200 m) give even more reasons to dive into the water at every opportunity.
At Europe’s southernmost tip stands the Europa Point Lighthouse, an architectural construction built to withstand any storm, that has watched over the Gibraltar Strait unfailingly since 1841. Its powerful beam of light helps sailors to find their bearings on the often-rough waters between the Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea. Created by Mido in 1944, the Ocean Star collection is characterised by its reliability, just like this monument, which was built to safely guide men embarking on new maritime conquests.
The new Ocean Star Tribute Gradient revives the legendary spirit of the diving watches of the 1960s. Its striking new red-to-black gradient colour is paired with flat diamond-cut hour, minute and seconds hands. To ensure perfect readability, even underwater, the bezel, indexes and hands are adorned with white Super-LumiNova®. An aperture at 3 o’clock displays the day and date. In a nod to its diving roots, the timepiece has a unidirectional rotating bezel with a black aluminium ring and silver-coloured markings. An ultra-resistant “glassbox”-style sapphire crystal adds to its vintage look.
The fully polished case presents gleaming rounded forms. In reference to the modest dimensions of the watches of the sixties, it has a diameter of only 40.5 mm, making it perfect for both men and women. On the case back, a polished starfish engraved in relief serves as a reminder of the Ocean Star’s historic expertise in water-resistance. For the first time, Mido has fitted the Ocean Star with a strap inspired by an iconic texture from the past.
In the ‘60s, this legendary rubber strap proved a welcome alternative for divers thanks to its remarkable resistance to moisture. Mido has chosen retro styling down to the last detail, with a criss-cross design in relief, notched edges, an embossed underside and perforations to let the skin breathe. Supple and refined, this vintage-look strap combines comfort and resistance.
